Many thanks are owed to Oregon for giving Utah the green light for the PAC-12 South. Utah won at Washington in a messy game, but having Oregon beat USC was what Utah really needed this weekend in order to allow a path to the conference championship. Utah has another bye week this week but then faces UCLA, Arizona, and Colorado to finish the season. Any one of those three could play spoiler and have been known to do so in the past.
There was a small amount of rearranging in the top 10 or so teams, which is interesting given how many of those teams were on byes. But that's the genius of the NEMindex. Every game affects every rank, so even while on a bye, if your previous opponents prove themselves to be better than previously realized, your rank may still improve (or vice versa). Ohio State maintains their stranglehold on 1st place, with a pretty impressive gap to Penn St at #2. Penn St is at Minnesota this week and LSU is at Alabama, so expect those games to really shake up the top of the table. I don't know that either of those outcomes will unseat Ohio State, but given the ease of their matchup, they may finally slip.
The biggest movers of the week were Tennessee (+30), thanks to their win over UAB, and FSU (-31) thanks to their home loss to Miami. I find this set of teams interesting, and they are likely some of the most inconsistent teams this season. They are perpetual outliers in the regression. FSU and Tennessee have played two of the hardest schedules in FBS this year while UAB has played the absolute easiest schedule. These teams are just really hard to get a solid read on.
I think that's all for this week, but if you have any comments or feedback or see mistakes or just want to tell me how wrong I am, please let me know on Twitter (@NateEMiller). #GoUtes.
