The rules of the Marble Game:
- Each power-5 team started the season with 200 marbles, each non-power-5 started with 100.
- For each home win you take 20% of your opponents marbles. For each road win you take 25%.
- Neutral site games are treated like home games (worth 20%) for each team
- Notre Dame and BYU were given the privilege of starting with 200 marbles
- Fractional marbles get rounded to whole marbles at the time when they are moved from one team to the other.
Again the remaining 4 undefeateds all stayed that way. As predicted in last week's post, Alabama has now moved in to first place. The weakness of ND's late-season schedule is finally catching up to them, while the strength of the conference schedules of power-5 schools is helping out teams like Alabama, Clemson, Michigan, & Washington State. UCF, as always, is in a weird spot. They beat Navy for only 5 marbles and thus stayed in 17th. They are likely only going to get ~72 more marbles if they win out and will be lucky to break into the top 10 (not counting conference championships yet).
The biggest games coming up in week 12 are: Syracuse vs ND at a neutral site (121 vs 56 marble gain potential), Duke at Clemson (146 vs 45 marbles), Arizona at Washington St (111 vs 37 marbles), W. Virginia at Oklahoma St (34 vs 83 marbles), and Iowa State at Texas (68 vs 88 marbles).
Alabama and Georgia both have easy games. Alabama is playing an FCS opponent (who I don't think has any marbles, but I'll check) while UGA plays UMass at home (9 marble take). So if ND and Clemson win their games, they will both move above Alabama into the 1st and 2nd spots with Bama falling to 3rd. Ohio St, Michigan, and Oklahoma all have games they should win against mediocre conference opponents.
As always, if you find any mistakes or have any comments please let me or the Commish know on Twitter (@NateEMiller and @IowaHawkBlog).
If anyone is interested in checking out the ranking system I've been running for about 8 years as well, I'd love to discuss it with you also. You can find the latest numbers here.
