As expected there are a couple new teams at the top. OSU and Florida both had marquee wins that bumped them up. This leaves only four SEC teams in the top 10 along with three Big-10 teams now. The SEC picture is going to change again this week with Florida playing LSU. Given that OSU is on a bye, this could put Florida into the #1 spot, or drop them out of the top 10 and put LSU up to about #3.
I don't actually do this calculation with the Marble Game, but in my other ranking system, I calculate that the Big-12 actually has the highest average rank across all teams in the conference, while the PAC-12 has collectively played the hardest schedules. Meanwhile the Big-12 has played the easiest collective schedule among P5 conferences while the PAC-12 has the 4th highest average rank. I'm not sure what this means necessarily, but it's interesting that the conference with the easiest schedule played so far has the highest average ranking while the conference that has played the hardest collective schedule has a much lower average rank.
Tennessee lost again and fell six more spots to 103rd, which interestingly puts them right next to Middle Tennessee in the rankings. SMU continues to climb and is the best G5 team. They're up to 21st with 256 marbles. A win over Temple this week may be enough to bump them into the top 15 or so.
Big games this week: Florida at LSU (83 and 79 marble gain potential), Florida St at Clemson (97 and 41), Oklahoma at Texas (74 and 63), Wisconsin vs Michigan St (42 and 84), and Penn State at Iowa (65 marbles each).
And finally, as always, if you see any errors or want to discuss or give feedback, please let the Commish or me know on Twitter (@IowaHawkBlog and @NateEMiller).
For those that don't recall or are new here, the rules of the Marble Game are:
- Each P5 team started the season with 200 marbles, each non-P5 started with 100.
- For each home win you take 20% of your opponents marbles. For each road win you take 25%.
- Neutral site games are treated like home games (worth 20%) for each team.
- Notre Dame and BYU were given the privilege of starting with 200 marbles.
- Fractional marbles get rounded at the time when they're moved from one team to the other.
