We have a tie at #1! Not sure how I missed this possibility last week when listing out potential endings for this week, but Clemson's win got them 41 marbles from Florida St and moved them into a dead heat with the Buckeyes, who had the week off. I don't usually bother putting the ties into the "Rank" column and just let them be listed in alphabetical order, but it just doesn't feel right to let OSU be listed as #2 so I put them both as #1 (I'm not bothering with the rest of the ties down the table).
The other big story of the week has got to be the losses by previously undefeated and high ranking teams. We knew either LSU or Florida had to go down and Florida's loss drops them to a tie with AZ St at 11th. What we didn't know was that UGA would lose at home, dropping them to 20th, and putting them right behind Wake Forest, who also got their first loss on the season and dropped 15 spots.
I incorrectly said last week that the Oklahoma-Texas game was at Texas, when in fact it was at a neutral site. Oklahoma's win got them 59 marbles from Texas---instead of the 74 I had said they'd get with a road win. That was still enough to move the Sooners into the top 10.
There are still 9 undefeated P5 teams and 3 undefeated G5 teams. Some of that may change this week, but I wouldn't count on it. Clemson has probably the hardest matchup they've had yet this year, being on the road at Louisville, who just played spoiler to Wake Forest this week. Penn St has one of their biggest matchup of the year against Michigan, but gets to do it at home this year. They also have Minnesota in a couple weeks, so clearly one of them will have at least one loss by then. I expect the rest of the undefeated P5s to stay undefeated. For example, Alabama continues it's relatively easy schedule with a game against 79th ranked Tennessee. In my other ranking system, I calculate that Alabama has played the 55th hardest schedule in FBS with an average opponent rank of 71st. To be fair, Clemson and LSU have played almost identically (non)difficult schedules.
The Marbles on the line for these and some other big games: Clemson at Louisville (64 vs 86 marble gain potential), Michigan at Penn St (97 vs 63), Baylor at Oklahoma St (56 vs 72), Arizona St at Utah (70 vs 63), Florida at S. Carolina (53 vs 63), and Oregon at Washington (79 vs 63).
I'm going to go ahead and assume that all our readers know the basic rules of the Marble Game now, but if you don't please see any previous week's post from this season where the rules are listed. And as always, if you have any feedback or see any issues feel free to reach out to the commissioner, David Burge (@IowaHawkBlog) or myself (@NateEMiller) on Twitter.
