Welcome back everyone, for another great season of IowaHawkBlog's Marble Game for 2022. For those unfamiliar with the Marble Game, David Burge came up with this idea years ago as a simple ranking system that could be explained in one tweet and that anyone could replicate themselves. The rules have changed slightly over the years, but the basic idea has always been the same.
The rules of the Marble Game for 2022:
- Each FBS team starts with 100 marbles + 10 bonus marbles for each Power-5 opponent on their schedule. This leads to teams having between 100 and 220 marbles to start the season.
- For each home win you take 20% of your opponents marbles.
- For each road win you take 25% of your opponents marbles.
- Neutral site games are treated like home games (worth 20%) for each team.
- Fractional marbles get rounded to whole marbles at the time when they are moved from one team to the other.
It is still obviously quite early in the season, so some of these results might be a bit counter intuitive, but they'll sort themselves out very soon (within a week or two).
