I was asked by multiple people to add in something on each post to remind people of the rules of the Marble Game, so here goes:
- Each power-5 team started the season with 200 marbles, each non-power-5 started with 100.
- For each home win you take 20% of your opponents marbles. For each road win you take 25%.
- Neutral site games are treated like home games (worth 20%) for each team
- Notre Dame and BYU were given the privilege of starting with 200 marbles
- Fractional marbles get rounded to whole marbles at the time when they are moved from one team to the other.
Alabama handled their first big test just as most of us probably figured they would. LSU has not scored at home against Alabama in over 120 minutes of game time, dating back to 2014. But the Bama win, as I explained last week, was not enough to take over first place... yet. ND won on the road and still holds the lead. ND just had a better early season schedule and is still riding their early command of 1st place. Alabama definitely has the higher potential to capture a lot more marbles down the stretch.
The four undefeateds stayed undefeated with UCF climbing another 8 spots to 17th. Their final few games won't be enough for them to climb very far though. Based on current marble counts they can only capture ~78 more in the regular season.
Big games coming up next week: Miss St at Alabama (potential to take 139 vs 50 marbles), Ohio St at Mich St (74 vs 83 marbles), Florida St at ND (146 vs 19 marbles), Clemson at BC (76 vs 102 marbles), Auburn at UGA (118 vs 45 marbles), and WSU at Colorado (31 vs 83 marbles). Michigan has an easy game against Rutgers (the worst power-5 team at 116th) and would get jumped by Ohio St if Ohio St wins.
So assuming ND, Bama, and Clemson win, it will be Bama 606, ND 604, Clemson 585.
Oh, and UTEP finally won one so Rice falls to last (they're last in my other system too).
As always, if you find any mistakes or have any comments please let me or the Commish know on Twitter (@NateEMiller and @IowaHawkBlog).
If anyone is interested in checking out the ranking system I've been running for about 8 years as well, I'd love to discuss it with you also. You can find the latest numbers here.
